Electrostatic large format printers such as the RasterGraphics 5442 as alternatives to solvent ink or regular inkjet printers.

Electrostatic printers are far faster than any inkjet, yet can cost from $100,000 to $250,000. Color quality may be less than people now expect from inkjet. But some improvements are possible.

RasterGraphics is one of the few remaining companies that produces an electrostatic printer, the model 5442. This is sold by Specialty Toner Corporation. At SGIA trade show it was possible to inspect the output from this printer. The president of Speciality Toner Corporation explained that electrostatic printers still had a place in the world of large format printers.

This was the first time anyone had cogently demonstrated the continuing advantage of electrostatic printers. After Phoenix went bankrupt and Xerox abandoned its own line of electrostatic printers, the world of electrostatic large format printers was sort of decimated. 3M claimed they still intend to manufacture their electrostatic printer and Specialty Toner Corporation is sticking with the RasterGraphics 5442.
